NORTH STRENGTHENS TIES
The North Melbourne Football Club has strengthened its ties with the Victorian community by announcing an extension of the club's community partnership with Life Saving Victoria.
The partnership was established in July 2005 with the aim of delivering the water safety message through the cooler months of the year, particularly to the male 'risk-taker' demographic.
"The 'Swim Safe Roos' message is to encourage young men to enjoy the water safely and has become a key part of the 'Play It Safe by the Water' campaign," said Life Saving Victoria Chief Operations Officer Warwick Waters.
''Due to a majority of drownings occurring in the winter, autumn and spring period, it fits well with football being a sport played in those months, and with their heroes reinforcing these key messages, we aim to reach these young male risk-takers and curb their dangerous behaviour.”
North Melbourne Football Club Chief Executive Eugene Arocca said the partnership was of great importance to the club.
"Life Saving Victoria is a great fit for North Melbourne given their focus on spreading the water safety message to young males and the community as a whole." Arocca said.
"Our players set a great example and certainly adhere to the 'Play it Safe, Take your mates' motto whether on the footy field or around the water."
As part of the partnership North Melbourne players will continue to wear their Life Saving Victoria rash vests at recovery sessions to actively promote the water safety message.
SUMMER CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Star Kangaroo footballer and Swim Safe Roos ambassador Drew Petrie was on hand recently to launch a revamped Play It Safe By The Water summer campaign for the coming warmer period.
The talented footballer teamed up with Emergency Services Minister Mr Bob Cameron in outlining the importance of the Play It Safe By The Water campaign for Victoria this summer.
The launch included the addition of four new promotional images each depicting a behaviour we should all adopt when at our favourite waterways including – “Never Swim Alone”, “Never Turn Your Back”, “Always Watch Them Around Water” and “Look Before You Leap”.
With key members from the Victoria aquatic and emergency services industry in attendance the event showcased the new images to be used in the Play It Safe By The Water campaign.
The Swim Safe Roos initiative focuses on using well known football identities to reach target audiences in particular the young male risk taker between the ages of 16 – 24, with the “Never Swim Alone” and “Look Before You Leap” messages directly aimed at this young risk taking group.
Petrie spoke of his own love of the water making reference to the importance of water in training and rehab for professional footballers.
The campaign is in full swing again this year, and for more information on the campaign and the Swim Safe Roos visit
