Pagan carved a successful career at North and represented Victoria in 1971. He had the strength to win the ball in packs and although he lacked pace he was reliable and backed his judgment. He played in the losing 1974 Grand Final side then was promptly cleared to South.

As a junior coach he took North under 19s to nine successive grand finals yet amazingly no senior club took a punt on him. When the under 19s competition folded he was even overlooked as reserves coach. He went to Essendon and took the reserves to a flag in his only year there.

Appointed coach of North in 1993 and took the side to the finals in his first year. He taught North players to believe in themselves. His passion for football was said to be without equal and he had an eye for detail that was renowned. He was often spotted at opposition training sessions with binoculars in hand. He was a true players' coach and was a fine communicator even though he was prone to occasionally unusual sayings.

Totally meticulous in his approach, he guided North to the 1996 and 1999 flags.
