Hailing from Mount Barker in Western Australia, Jim and his brother Phil were recruited from Claremont.

Both made their debuts for the Kangaroos in 1982, and Jim remained with the club until 1989. He played 134 games and booted 229 goals for North Melbourne.

Throughout his career, Jim exhibited an extraordinary capacity to find his brother, and the fascinating 'radar', as people often dubbed it, saw the brothers work the ball together towards the North goal, opening up play for each other and their teammates.

Jim won North Melbourne's best and fairest award in 1986 and was awarded for a great career by being inducted into the club's Team of the Century in 2009.
