A highly skilled left foot winger Schwass was recruited from South Warnambool and originally was tied to Fitzroy. One of the few men to have won the Morrish Medal (1987) who went on to be a top performer at senior level.
A Victorian representative in his first year he lost his way for a while, but in 1993 had a great year with his long kicking and incisive runs from the wing. He was thought to be a fixture at North but was traded to Sydney for Shannon Grant at the end of 1997.
His suspension in the 1997 finals was costly for North and was said to have prompted a huge spray from coach Denis Pagan. Pagan denied it was the reason for Schwass being swapped.
He represented Victoria three times. A brilliant left foot kick, he won North's Best and Fairest in 1994 and 1995 and was a member of the 1996 flag side.
Established himself as a key player with the Swans because of his experience and non-stop attitude. Won the Swans' best and fairest in 1999 and was troubled by minor injuries in 2000 and 2001, reducing his effectiveness.
Schwass, born in New Zealand, retired during the 2002 season saying he no longer enjoyed his football.
