A strong and reliable defender, Gibson originally played for the Oakleigh Chargers before joining Port Melbourne in the VFL. He was rookie listed by North Melbourne in 2006 and quickly made his mark before being promoted for the first round clash against Port Adelaide. He went on to play ten games for the season. In 2007, Gibson suffered a serious injury which almost prematurely brought an end to his football career. He missed 12 matches before making a remarkable comeback just in time for North Melbourne's finals campaign. In just his third game back the number 38 was able to shut down dangerous Hawthorn forward Lance Franklin and help his team into a Preliminary Final. The following year he would become a regular in the Kangaroos team, missing just three games and shoring up a spot in North's best 22. Dean Laidley put the pressure on Gibson to lift in the early part of 2009, and he responded in the best possible way. He produced the most consistent season of his career and enjoyed a different role swapping through the midfield as the Roos looked for a winning formula. He averaged 17 possessions a game and earned best afield honours in the win over Port Adelaide in Round 22. Darren Crocker 2009 review: Gibbo's really strong down back but we always knew he could play there. When I took over, I experimented with playing him through the midfield. He learnt a hell of a lot about himself and his football in a few of those games, having to play on the better midfielders for the opposition. Eventually, he'll just settle back into a defensive role. It's nice to know you've got the flexibility that he can actually go onball with a (Matthew) Pavlich or (Adam) Goodes-type player if they start forward and try to shake him by going into the midfield. He's got a good engine and at no stage does Josh look like he's labouring.
