After being selected by the Kangaroos with their first-round pick (14) in 1993, Adam Simpson played in two premierships in his first five years in the AFL. The in-and-under midfielder averaged over 20 disposals a game throughout his career, a sign of his consistency throughout 306 games for North Melbourne. He was an all-Australian in 2002, crowned Syd Barker Medal winner in the same year and finished in the top three five times. He became captain of the club in 2004 but stood down at the end of the 2008 season despite leading the club to three finals campaigns. At 33 years-old and as a veteran of the club in 2009, the former captain performed as well as when he made his debut back in 1995. After handing over the reigns to Brent Harvey at the start of the season, the hard working Simpson led the North Melbourne team for disposals, and had one of the best seasons in his long and decorated career. Simpson hung up his boots in round 18 of 2009 after 15 seasons at the highest level. The day before his final match, the number seven injured his calf at his last ever training session, but courage and determination saw him take the field to receive a fitting farewell from Roos supporters. Darren Crocker 2009 review: He had an impact on games for a guy who was in the last year of his career. The way he handled his retirement and exit from the club was class and he's now looking to get into coaching. He'll make a really good fist of that.Draft history: 1993 National AFL Draft 1st round selection (Kangaroos) No. 14 overall.First game for North Melbourne: Round 18, 1995 v West CoastPlayer honours: best and fairest 2002; 2nd best and fairest 2007; 3rd best and fairest 2001, 2003, 2004; All-Australian 2002; premiership sides 1996, 1999; pre-season premiership side 1998; International Rules Series 2002, 2003; AFL Rising Star nominee 1996; Captain 2004-2008.Brownlow Medal: 72 career votesPlayer sponsors: Arden Street Supporters Group, Les RossBecome a North Melbourne fan on FacebookFollow North Melbourne on Twitter
