The Kangaroos headed west for their season opener and quickly found last year's wooden-spooner, the Eagles, weren't going to be easy-beats.

Todd Goldstein's late withdrawal opened the door for rookie Cameron Pedersen to debut and while Dean Cox proved the dominant ruckman on the day, Pedersen earned plenty of respect for his tireless efforts.

Cameron Richardson, Shaun Atley and Ben McKinley also made their debuts in the royal blue and white.

Andrew Swallow got his year off to a strong start with 26 possessions (14 contested), but without the likes of Petrie, Grima, McIntosh and Bastinac, the visitors were undermanned and fell short by two points.

North Melbourne was keen to earn respect against the league's best after struggling against the top four in 2010.

It wasn't to be though with inaccuracy costing the side in the opening term and the reigning premier Collingwood took full advantage to open a four-goal cushion at the first change.

The Magpies were never seriously threatened thereafter and it turned out to be a day to forget for Brad Scott's team.

Captain Brent Harvey fought valiantly and after the match the pressure was piled on the club's younger brigade to step up to the next level.

It was the club's second trip to Perth in a month and an in-form Dockers' outfit was eyeing a spot in top four.

North Melbourne did its best to stay in the contest in the first half and by the main break, was still right in the game trailing by just nine points.

The Kangaroos lead the contested football and the inside 50 count, but a five goal to one third term from the Dockers proved the knockout blow.

Andrew Swallow was again among the best with 31 possessions and two goals while Leigh Adams also worked hard.

It looked as though North would break its duck after kicking the first five goals of the game, however Richmond got back into the game and by half-time the margin was just ten points.

Inaccurate kicking again proved costly but North Melbourne still held a handy lead at three-quarter time. After conceding seven straight goals in the last quarter while managing just 2.8, the Roos remained winless after five rounds.

Drew Petrie had his finest game of the year with six goals, while Swallow continued his rich vein of form with another 32 possessions and two goals.

A tireless workrate helped North Melbourne get the early ascendency against the Power at Etihad Stadium.

By half-time, the Kangaroos had broken out to a 24-point lead and unlike previous weeks, they were able to overcome poor kicking in front of goals.

It wasn't until the final term that Brad Scott's men were able to put the game beyond reach and the 60-point win would prove a great reward for effort.

North finished the game with 60 tackles to 38, a true indication of hard work.

Todd Goldstein took full advantage of an underdone Dean Brogan and had arguably the best game of his career with 22 disposals and 35 hit-outs.

Lindsay Thomas kicked just the one goal for the day, but it was his defensive efforts that drew praise from the coach.

Disposals: Brady Rawlings 26, Brent Harvey 24, Daniel Pratt 24

The Scott brothers came up against each other for the first time in a home and away match and the battle for bragging rights was strong despite the teams sitting at opposite ends of the table.

North Melbourne had lost its last six against the Cats, but held sway in the first term thanks to some good work up forward from vice-captain Drew Petrie.

A momentary lapse in the second quarter allowed Geelong a sniff and it took full advantage to amass a 30-point lead at the break.

The Kangaroos kept battling, but the efforts of Petrie, Brady Rawlings and the in-form Daniel Wells weren't enough to trouble the opposition in enemy territory.

North Melbourne had just one win on the board at the start of round eight, but held an unrivalled recent record against Dean Bailey's Demons and would have gone in with some confidence.

Things didn't go to plan early though as Melbourne's willingness to play on and take risks caught the Kangaroos on the back-foot, and it resulted in a five goal lead at quarter time.

North's improved workrate in the second quarter forced its opponent to chip the ball around, while it started winning more of the footy in the contested situation.

Todd Goldstein was the dominant player in the ruck with an impressive 30 hit-outs and 26 possessions in the absence of Demon Mark Jamar, but it was Daniel Wells who shone most with 29 disposals and three valuable goals.

Aaron Edwards banged through six goals and pulled down ten grabs.

Disposals: Daniel Wells 29, Leigh Adams 28, Todd Goldstein 26

Marks: Aaron Edwards 10, Daniel Wells 8, Nathan Grima 8

Goals: Aaron Edwards 6, Daniel Wells 3, Brent Harvey 3

Round 9 v Brisbane
The GABBA

The return of Jonathan Brown made the task all the more tougher against the Lions at the GABBA in round nine.

First-gamer Luke Delaney got the job on the captain and battled admirably, but Brown's four goals helped Brisbane to its first win of the year.

North looked the dominant side early in difficult conditions and it was again Aaron Edwards doing the early damage with three first half goals.

A 25-9 clearance tally to half-time should have seen the travelling team well in front, but wasted opportunities saw it up by just 13 points.

It would prove their downfall, as Brisbane ran the game out better with three goals to nil in the dying stages.

Brad Scott was forced to go back to the drawing board, with good performances from Andrew Swallow, Scott Thompson and Ben Cunnington not enough to register the club's second win.

Disposals: Andrew Swallow 33, Brady Rawlings 30, Leigh Adams 24

Marks: Drew Petrie 7, Daniel Pratt 7

Goals: Aaron Edwards 3, Drew Petrie 2, Lindsay Thomas 2

Dream Team points: Drew Petrie 125, Andrew Swallow 116, Brent Harvey 100

It was another substandard output in front of goal, and another devestating loss for North Melbourne in round ten against the Swans.

Scott Thompson did a fine job on Adam Goodes to quell his influence and early on it looked as if the Swans' recent dominance against the Kangaroos would end.

The match was a dour struggle from start to finish, and whoever lost would consider themselves unlucky. Unfortunately it would be North for the seventh time in 2011. The margin a solitary point.

24,267 people were at Etihad Stadium as the home team won the contested ball tally, the clearances and inside 50's but kicked 9.17 to fall short for the fourth time by under three goals.

Todd Goldstein amassed an amazing 53 hit-outs and Andrew Swallow, Leigh Adams and Daniel Wells were among the best. Drew Petrie kicked three, but would lament some missed shots in front of goal.

Disposals: Andrew Swallow 28, Daniel Wells 26, Brady Rawlings 25

Marks: Scott Thompson 5, Drew Petrie 5

During the week all the focus was around Brent Harvey's record-equaling 311th game.

Sparked by its captain's achievement, North Melbourne's players hit the ground running with Drew Petrie looking dangerous up forward early.

By quarter time the Kangaroos had opened up a four-goal lead on Adelaide, thanks largely to a remarkable first quarter from Andrew Swallow in which he had 17 possessions and ten clearances, on his way to 39 and 18 respectively for the game.

The Crows were able to work their way back into the game in the second quarter, but in front of its home fans at Etihad Stadium, North Melbourne weren't going to let this one slip.

Harvey finished with two goals in a perfect celebration of his career, while Petrie, Anthony, Ziebell and Wells were all prominent.

Todd Goldstein was again influential in the ruck with 48 hit-outs.

Disposals: Andrew Swallow 39, Brady Rawlings 26, Liam Anthony 26, Jack Ziebell 25

The Roos got off to the perfect start in Brent Harvey's 312th appearance, kicking three goals in as many minutes at Metricon Stadium.

Harvey was a key figure in North's brilliant first quarter and by the first break, he'd helped open up a 43-point lead with Daniel Wells the dominant player on the ground with 15 possessions.

The Suns were far more competitive after quarter-time, but the game was ultimately over.

Aaron Edwards slotted through five goals to keep his good run of goal-kicking form in tact, while Liam Anthony was a surprise inclusion up forward and booted three majors to add another dimension to his game.

Wells finished with 33 possessions, while Harvey showed why he's played so long at the highest level, racking up 29 disposals and kicking four terrific goals.

Disposals: Daniel Wells 33, Brent Harvey 29, Ryan Bastinac 25, Brady Rawlings 25

There was plenty at stake when the Kangaroos came up against old rival Essendon at Etihad Stadium.
The out-of-form Bombers were looking to turn their recent form around, while North was shooting for its third straight win.

Brent Harvey got his team off to the perfect start with an early goal and his teammates made the most of their opportunities to gain a 19-point lead the first change.

It proved to be a see-saw battle in quarters two and three, with James Hird's men slowly clawing back the margin. When they hit the lead mid-way through the final term, it was going to be hard for North Melbourne to win.

With true resilience the boys from Aegis Park were able to hit back and when Drew Petrie snapped a seemingly impossible goal from the pocket with a minute left, there were scenes of jubilation on the ground and among the fans.

Brady Rawlings racked up 35 possessions in the victory, while Cameron Pedersen put his hand up as a genuine forward prospect with some important marks with the game in the balance.

Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey and Lindsay Thomas were also among the best with the latter booting four goals.

Disposals: Brady Rawlings 35, Brent Harvey 27, Andrew Swallow 27

Marks: Aaron Edwards 8, Drew Petrie 8, Cameron Pedersen 8

The Power were desperate to turn their season around at AAMI Stadium, while North Melbourne was aiming for its fourth win in a month.

It was goal for goal in the opening term with neither side able to gain momentum, but the Kangaroos dominated just before half-time and opened a three goal lead.

Drew Petrie caused plenty of trouble for the Port defenders, while Cameron Pedersen was again impressive in the contested situation as North extended its lead to 51 by the final change.

A lapse in the last quarter restricted the lead from growing further, but a 45-point win in enemy territory was a more than satisfactory result and brought the Kangaroos within reach of the top eight.

Jack Ziebell played perhaps the finest game of his career with some terrific work mostly in the contested situation, while Daniel Wells and Levi Greenwood both had an impact at vital times.

Todd Goldstein exploited the Power's lack of ruck stocks for the second time this year with a club-record 54 hit-outs, while Brent Harvey snuck in for three important goals.

Disposals: Daniel Wells 27, Jack Ziebell 27, Liam Anthony 21

Marks: Drew Petrie 11, Cameron Pedersen 9, Aaron Edwards 8

Desperate for revenge after two convincing losses in 2010, North went into its game against the Saints full of confidence after a big win interstate.

A momentary lapse in concentration gifted St Kilda the half-time lead and from there it was always going to be difficult for the Roos to fight back.

North's pressure was relentless and it had every opportunity to win in the last quarter, but Ross Lyon's team resorted to some defensive tactics to hold out for a nine-point win.

The Kangaroos had few stand-outs on the day, but Todd Goldstein's 47 hit-out effort and Leigh Adams’ work around the goals were important.

Disposals: Brady Rawlings 25, Daniel Wells 21, Ryan Bastinac 19

There were encouraging signs early for North Melbourne but wasted opportunities in front of goal proved costly.

Within 16 points at the first change, Collingwood quickly asserted its authority and it would turn out to be the Roos’ most disappointing effort for the year.

In difficult conditions the Magpies won by 117 points.

Todd Goldstein could again hold his head high, while Daniel Wells, Andrew Swallow and Jack Ziebell all battled valiantly on a difficult day.

Coming off consecutive losses, Brad Scott put the pressure on his team to perform against the Bulldogs and the players responded in the opening quarter.

Holding a handy lead at half-time, North Melbourne took the foot off the pedal in the third quarter and it gave Barry Hall and the Bulldogs a sniff.

Many expected the Kangaroos to fall, but sheer will and spirit, as well as some remarkable individual performances from Drew Petrie, Daniel Wells, Jack Ziebell and Andrew Swallow, helped the home team to a 31-point victory.

North Melbourne went in as heavy favourites against a Brisbane side without Jonathan Brown.

The Lions had been the victor in the round nine clash between the sides and couldn't be underestimated. Again they proved ultra-competitive and even led mid-way through the third quarter.

Some brilliance from youngster Ryan Bastinac helped North regain the ascendency and his side would eventually run away with an unconvincing win.

Bastinac finished with 29 disposals, while Drew Petrie was again the hero up forward despite some inaccuracy in front of goal.

Disposals: Ryan Bastinac 29, Andrew Swallow 24, Leigh Adams 23, Brent Harvey 22

The Kangaroos were hoping for a memorable night in their only Friday night match for the year and a big crowd was on hand for the clash against the Blues.

In what was a see-saw-battle, it was Carlton that missed opportunities in front of goal early and allowed North Melbourne an early break.

Drew Petrie was kept quiet and the Roos struggled to find other avenues to goal in the last quarter, while Bryce Gibbs was the hero for Brett Ratten's team with four goals.

The boys from Aegis Park fought till the final siren, but for the fifth time in 2011, they fell short by three goals or less.

Andrew Swallow was considered by many as the best player on the night, while Jack Ziebell kept his good run of form going.

With their finals chances hanging by a thread after Essendon's win the previous night, the importance of the trip to Launceston grew even more for North.

Hawthorn was in terrific form and in torrid conditions, the game became a scrap with plenty of contested footy.

Neither side was able to get on top, but when the Hawks broke out to a three-goal lead in the last term, the game looked over.

Matt Campbell had other ideas and booted four goals in a brief spell that almost singlehandedly pulled his side over the line.

It wasn't to be though, Lance Franklin stepped up with some brilliance of his own to break the hearts of the courageous Roos.

Needing to win its final three matches to be a chance of playing finals, North Melbourne burst out of the blocks against the Dockers and never looked back.

Aaron Mullett looked comfortable in defence on debut while Aaron Edwards and Cameron Pedersen did the damage up the other end with three goals apiece.

The game was all but over by half time and Matthew Pavlich's early exit from the game due to injury didn't help Fremantle's cause.

In their last home game of the season, the Kangaroos gave their loyal supporters plenty to celebrate with a comprehensive 98-point victory.

Andrew Swallow continued his terrific year, while Leigh Adams, Daniel Wells and youngster Kieran Harper were all good performers.

Dubbed ‘match of the round’, North Melbourne's clash against the Saints would see the winner in the mix for finals.

St Kilda started stronger, but mid-way through the second term it was the Kangaroos with the ascendency thanks to the likes of Drew Petrie and Leigh Adams in attack.

As they'd done in round 15 though, the Saints fought back valiantly with five straight goals.

Six goals to two in the third quarter snuffed out any hope of a North comeback and its hopes of September action were over.

Andrew Swallow, Jack Ziebell and Scott Thompson were all brave in defeat, but it was a night to forget for Brad Scott and his men.

Finals were out of reach but there was still plenty of play for in the final round with club stalwart Brady Rawlings playing his 245th and final game.

Facing in the in-form Tigers, North was the better team in the first quarter and broke out to a two-goal lead.

Aaron Black was a stand-out on debut in the early stages, while Hamish McIntosh in his first game back, and Todd Goldstein dominated in the ruck.

Richmond fought back in the second term though and kicked six goals to two with Jack Riewoldt getting into the game.

In a see-sawing battle, Lindsay Thomas and Aaron Edwards were the instigators of a third quarter turnaround. The Tigers would come again, and only some individual brilliance from Drew Petrie could seperate the teams.
