Recent Form

North Melbourne   St Kilda
Last week: Won by 45 points v Port

Last week: Bye
North extended its winning streak to four against the Power last week and moved within reach of the top eight.

The next month will provide the real challenge though. Each of the Kangaroos' victories have been against sides now below them on the ladder and although the Saints are 13th, they have found some form.

It only gets harder from there too, with blockbusters against Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn to come.

The Saints had a start to the season that could only be described as disappointing by their standards.

Before the bye last week, they'd won three of their past five and while finals still look a long way off, they have taken some positive steps prevailing against Melbourne, the Bulldogs and Fremantle.

Like North Melbourne, St Kilda look likely to be in a log jam of teams fighting for a prized spot in the eight.

Who's hot?

Drew Petrie Sam Fisher
Petrie has become a defender's nightmare after a slow start to the year.

He's kicked three goals a game during North's winning run, but even more impressively averaged 10 marks over the past month.

Against the Power he produced the full bag of tricks with several one handed marks and went close to eclipsing Wayne Carey's decade-long record for contested grabs.
While some Saints have copped criticism for their performances on the back of the Grand Final loss, Fisher has been a shining light.

His versatility makes him a valuable asset for Ross Lyon and his rebound from defence can be damaging.

The 29 year-old has averaged more than 22 possessions a game in 2011 and was the Saints best a fortnight ago against Geelong.

Where it could be won...

Forward presence   Seasoned campaigners

While the Saints have become more attacking this season, they've still struggled to put big scores on the board.

Only twice this year Ross Lyon's men have scored 15 goals, while North Melbourne has achieved that feat in each of its last four wins.

Sam Fisher, Zac Dawson and James Gwilt are all more than capable in defence, but will they be able to stop a forward line with the likes of Petrie, Edwards and this year's revelation Pedersen?

St Kilda mighn't have reached the lofty heights that it achieved over the past two seasons just yet, but things are certainly improving.

The Saints' stars have started to hit form and any side that has Brendan Goddard, Leigh Montagna and Nick Dal Santo in its midfield mix warrants respect.

Nick Riewoldt hasn't hit his straps yet and Milne is in a quiet patch, but if they can find the footy it presents a whole new challenge for Brent Harvey and the Kangaroos.

Turning It around?

Andrew Swallow Nick Riewoldt

He won't be appearing in this column very often but Andrew Swallow had a rare quiet game against the Power.

It says a lot for his brilliant season too when 14 possessions and nine tackles is considered below par.

Swallow has copped plenty of attention from opposition taggers this year but his athleticism and brilliance in the middle could prove too much for the Saints' taggers.

The St Kilda captain has had a difficult time of it this year with opponents putting an even greater emphasis on shutting him out of the game.

Poor delivery hasn't helped either and while workrate has stayed at its high standard, the Saints may have too much reliance on their power-forward and captain.

With seven Brownlow votes in his last three games against North, he's sure to be a key factor again.

Match winners

Jack Ziebell   Brendan Goddard
Ziebell has emerged as a genuine quality midfielder and in the past month, has hit career-best form.

The fitness concerns seem to be a thing of the past and his tough, fearless approach that has brought other rewards.

Against the Power he managed six clearances and 27 possessions (13 of those contested) to play a huge role in the convincing win.
Goddard is another who copped criticism for his form at the start of the year, but has been a key instigator in the Saints' turnaround.

He's averaged 25 possessions through the last three matches, and racked up a massive 37 against the Demons little more than a month ago.

His ability to go forward, play through the midfield and down back is a massive advantage for Ross Lyon. He has been a big performer against North Melbourne in the past.

Waiting in the wings

Matt Campbell   Will Johnson

Injuries have prevented Campbell from reaching the peaks of his 2008 season in recent years, but with two games under his belt at VFL level, he edges closer to a return.

With Sam Wright out, the lively forward looms as a dangerous option under the feet of Petrie and Edwards and he's previously combined well with Lindsay Thomas.

The Saints will be without Justin Koschitzke due to suspension and it could be the perfect opportunity for Will Johnson to shine.

The 191cm big man was drafted as key-defender, but having kicked 21 goals in the VFL this season has the ability to present another target alongside Nick Riewoldt in a forward post.
