Urquhart was highly rated as North Melbourne’s second pick in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, but struggled with the transition from junior football in the early part of his career.

Despite a difficult start, Urquhart was determined to perform at the highest level. After a strong showing for North Ballarat in the opening rounds of 2008, he finally made his AFL debut against Brisbane in round 10. Urquhart couldn’t have asked for a better start, the highly skilled defender racked up 21 possessions and didn’t look back for the remainder of 2008. He earned himself a Rising Star nomination in Round 18 and quickly secured a spot in the North Melbourne side.

Urquhart also represented North Ballarat in the VFL Grand Final and helped them to a premiership with a brilliant goal in the third quarter.

Darren Crocker 2009 review:
Early in the year he was actually going OK but then his form tailed off. He'd go missing and wouldn't show much in games and obviously the consequence was he got dropped. Gav's been re-signed and he needs to make sure he gets himself back playing the type of footy we know he's capable of. At his best, he can run, penetrate and use the ball well. It's been a good learning year for him. You can sometimes come in, things click and you can take it for granted a little bit. It's not until you're challenged that you realise it is a lot of hard work and you do need to be fairly passionate about your footy to allow yourself to play the best you can.
